Girls Love Roundup – Lonely Yuri

Welcome to the new format for Girls Love Roundup where instead of just trying to list every single girls love release each month I’ll be focusing on specific releases and talking about them in more detail, followed by a list of recent releases. Starting off with a new visual novel release on Steam, Lonely Yuri.

Lonely Yuri

Original Title: 孤独に効く百合
Developed by Night-time Sheep
Published by DLSite.com
Price: €9,99/£7.19/$9,99

Originally released in summer of 2011, Lonely Yuri is a visual novel about Fusa Konno, a first year high school student, who meets Seri, a mysterious shut-in girl who nobody knows much about. Struck by her beauty, she decides to get to know Seri better, leading to the both of them falling in love and learning more about each other.

Going for an “atmospheric romance”, Lonely Yuri focuses on the intimacy and feelings between these two girls rather than attempting to tell a greater narrative. The cast and focus is small, in a way that compliments the story. I should put a warning here that the story does open with non-consensual behaviour on Seri’s part. It does call this out, but it could be potentially triggering for survivors of sexual assault.

The illustrations are made by Minakata Sunao, who most famously worked as the illustrator on Kouga Yun‘s manga series Akuma no Riddle. Her sharp and cool art style lends itself really well to the more serious romance portrayed in Lonely Yuri, setting the visual novel apart from other similiar girls love titles. The character designs were made by Nanata, the only visual novel credit to their name. Oddly enough the scenario is written by porori who generally work on fetish nukige titles, but Lonely Yuri is all ages.

The novel itself is kinetic, as in that it doesn’t feature any player choices. It’s also not particularily long and as such it’s priced thereafter, but I recommend checking it out. There’s a free demo available on Steam and the full game is 10% off for the first week of release. The English version was technically released in 2012, on DLSite’s own website, but with this title they’re making a Steam debut and I’m glad they went with this game in particular.

  1. I will have to check this one out sometime.

I have read a couple of short ones recently, Kanojo no Sekai & Prism which I thought were really good.

I really like Murciélago, badass main character with a great supporting cast.
